Pendennis Castle and St. Mawes
English Heritage
Due for completion April 2018
Overall budget £400k

English Heritage appointed Simon Leach Design in March 2017 as lead design consultant for the re-interpretation and re-design of the visitor experiences at Pendennis Castle and St Mawes Castle in Cornwall. The overall project seeks to showcase key moments in the history of both sites and to reveal little known human interest stories of the people who lived and were garrisoned here in times of peace and times of conflict. Pendennis Castle is a spectacular artillery fortification in Falmouth, Cornwall, and boasts an active history of 416 years (1540–1956). It overlooks the Carrick Roads in the Fal estuary and looks out to sea. Sitting on the opposite side of the Fal estuary is St Mawes Castle. Both Pendennis and St Mawes were originally built as part of Henry VIII’s coastal defence programme.
